Manroland Sheetfed Streamlines German Production

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

Manroland Sheetfed - streamlining post pandemic

The German press builder Manroland Sheetfed GmbH Offset Printing announced on Friday that it had completed a post-pandemic reorganization plan to streamline production at its Offenbach factory.

Of the company's nearly 900 German employees, 140 are being let go, or about 15% of them, of which 120 are indirect employees. The company has about 1,500 employees worldwide.

Only 20 people are joining the voluntary program while direct workers are still being retained. To make up for this, the company is increasing apprentice intake year after year.

Over 80% of the reductions are voluntary, with the majority of leavers taking early retirement. The remainder will leave the company before the year’s end, with two thirds departing by the end of March.

Editor’s Note

The pandemic had a severe impact on the German heavy metal scene, as it had on much of the industry. Although order books have been replenished, the subsequent recovery has been plagued by supply chain bottlenecks, skyrocketing fuel, material, and transportation costs, and high absenteeism.

Despite being much less dangerous, Covid-19 is becoming more and more common in Germany. Since virtually all restrictions were lifted by the German government in November 2021, the number of cases has skyrocketed and absenteeism levels in the nation have reached all-time highs.

The manufacturing industry's supply chain issues are starting to get better, but Manroland Sheetfed, which makes all of its recognizable presses in Germany, has taken the full brunt of the post-pandemic disruption.

Since last summer, the company has been analyzing its operations and looking closely at every facet of its business. According to the business, streamlining won't affect its ability to assemble the 500 printing units (or roughly 100 presses) anticipated for this year. It also claims that it won't compromise Manroland's renowned R&D.

The announced headcount reductions have mostly come from support roles like logistics, back-office administration, and others.

The review has little impact on Manroland Sheetfed Offset Printing market structure, which consists of over 40 sales and service subsidiaries. The German sales and service organization has combined small outposts in Austria and Switzerland.
