The certification Energy Savings and dematerialization certificates from GreenCircle demonstrate Esko's dedication to sustainability.
Esko is pleased to announce that the XPS Crystal flexo imaging unit has received certifications from GreenCircle for Certified Energy Savings and dematerialization. GreenCircle is a reputable third-party certification organisation that objectively assesses the veracity of sustainability claims.
Following numerous testing, measurement, and in-depth customer surveys over several months, GreenCircle verified Esko's claims that the XPS Crystal saves energy by 41% for tradeshops and 59% for converters. The Esko XPS Crystal also attained dematerialization accredition in terms of broader environmental sustainability, with GreenCircle verifying a startling 92% decrease in waste - and 100% elimination of hazardous waste - during the course of the machine.
"Having sustainable operations has rapidly evolved from being a 'nice to have' strategy to a 'must do' critical demands for brands and their packaging suppliers," said Jan De Roeck, Esko Director of Marketing, Industry Relation and Strategy. This implies helping brand owners who are under a lot of pressure to meet customer requirements and who require assistance in accelerating their sustainability commitments, according to the packaging industry.
"The XPS Crystal uses a UV LED array instead of mercury tubes used in a traditional main exposure bank light table," explained Jan. The UV power necessary for a perfect curing of a flexo plate is given exactly uniformly through the preset settings by a single click per plate type and plate thickness. Its digital UV LED exposure considerably improves the quality and consistency of flexo plates. The UV LEDs of the XPS Crystal are only activated for the back UV exposure and the primary exposure of the flexo plate, unlike bank exposure frames, which use a comparatively considerable amount of energy from preheating through the exposure time and idle time throughout the full working shift. The amount of energy used in the idle state is almost zero.
GreenCircle's quantification and certification of these savings "validates those claims and is attestation that we as a business are not only participating in the sustainability debate, but we are also delivering against our own objectives - and those of our customers," the company claims.
The Certified Energy Savings Certification from GreenCircle, carried out in accordance with ISO 14021 and FTC Green Guides, proves a company's dedication to minimising effects during the use phase of a product's life cycle.
GreenCircle evaluated the XPS Crystal and carried out their own independant testing over the course of several months, according to Jan. During a site visit, GreenCircle compared the power consumptions of the device when exposing flexo plates designed for UV LED exposure to the power consumption of a UV bank light frame exposing flexo plates designed for UV lamps to compute energy savings. Based on an investigation of an eight-hour work shift, it was shown that tradeshops save 41% more energy than converters do, while converters save 59% more.
The GreenCircle dematerialization certification, which pertains to the absolute or relative reduction in quantity of materials required, and/or the waste generated in the manufacture of a unit of economic output, was also attained by the XPS Crystal.
"GreenCircle's Dematerialization certification demonstrates our commitment to developing products that consume less material over the course of their lifespan, or that use fewer materials within the product and its packaging," said Jan. The Dematerialization certificate shows how a product uses less material and generates more hazardous waste elimination that an equivalent product or an earlier version.
GreenCircle evaluated the XPS Crystal by contrasting its "product recipes" with a conventional main exposure bank light table and found that there was a decrease in material inputs over the course of the product's lifecycle. "The assessors calculated the number of plates produced during an eight-hour shift using the typical number of UV LED light bulbs. The comparable number of light bulbs required to produce one plate from the XPS Crystal was represented by a conventional main exposure bank light.
"GreenCircle calculated the percentage of material saved by using the XPS Crystal as an incredible 92% after the units were measured and gathered."
With companies and their packaging converters dealing with escalating consumer demands and legislative reform, Jan claimed that it is now necessary for them to make sure that their activities are carbon neutral, in keeping with the idea of sustainability, which forbids causing environmental harm.
"Esko is acutely aware of the role it plays in providing digitization, automation, and connection of packaging development processes to deliver quality and operational efficiency gains for businesses," the executive stated. "We are creating solutions that enable businesses to minimize their environmental impact by reducing waste in the production process," the company claims. "We are developing technologies that eliminate errors and waste, while speeding up and efficiently connecting processes and devices."
